From Open Data to Open Government

Compact Voice has been working closely with a variety of government departments and other VCS organisations to help develop the UK's Open Government Partnership National Action Plan (NAP).

The plan, 'From Open Data to Open Government', has now been published and is available to download below.

The plan makes reference to Compact principles throughout, particularly Principle 2 which outlines the need for effective and transparent design and developments of policies, programmes and public services.

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) National Action Plan has been developed by government in partnership with a range of civil society organisations, including Compact Voice. It sets out a series of commitments the UK government is making to improve transparency, participation and accountability.

The National Action Plan has been structured to complement the themes of the OGP’s annual summit 2013, which took place from October 30 – November 1. The 5 themes of the plan are:

Open data – radically opening up government data for greater accountability, public service improvement and economic growth
Government integrity – fighting corruption and strengthening democracy through transparent government
Fiscal transparency – helping citizens to follow the money
Empowering citizens – transforming the relationship between citizens and governments
Natural resource transparency – ensuring natural resources and extractive revenues are used for public benefit
The Plan details the progress made to date for each of the above themes. It also outlines new commitments and timelines. The organisations and groups from civil society who worked on the plan, including Compact Voice, have all helped to develop and agree the commitments.

The Plan’s aim is to encourage accountability and transparency. An important element of the ‘next steps’ outlined in the Plan is how government and civil society will continue to work in partnership with each other to deliver this aim. Compact Voice will continue to take an active role in this partnership and will post updates whenever there are developments.
