Candidates in Sheffield Central [Region: Yorkshire and Humberside]
Mr Paul Blomfield
1. How important is the charity and voluntary sector to your constituency?
Local groups are at the heart of active communities. The economy is the biggest issue in this election, charities and voluntary groups are major employers and important to the local economy. They are also vital for providing services often to the most disadvantaged people. Finally, we should never forget the importance of the campaigning role charities and voluntary groups have. They can be the glue that keeps people together and a way of getting local people to get their voices heard.
2. What efforts will you make - if elected - to work with local charities and voluntary sector organisations in your constituency?
I will set up a regular forum for all charities and voluntary organisations in the constituency to meet with me. We need a fresh approach to politics and part of that is making sure that politicians listen to the views of local people. Local charities and community groups are an essential way of being able to speak with people, especially those that so often do not have a voice. As an MP it is impossible to be an expert on everything but within the local voluntary and community sector there will be the experts on most issues. An MPs job is to make sure these experts can have their voice heard. I think local charities and voluntary groups are a vital part of local communities and are essential to inclusive societies. Joining a group is a democratic act in itself.
3. Will you champion the Compact in your constituency, to encourage better partnership working between the local public sector and the voluntary and community sector?
I think the introduction of the Compact was an important move by the Labour Government. I dont think on its own it can solve all the problems between the public and third sectors but it can be a useful tool to improve relationships. I do recognise that the Compact needs some more teeth. I was pleased with Labours manifesto commitment to put the Compact on a statutory footing.
4. Additional comments:
As you may expect this is a busy time so I apologise for not giving a longer answer. Hopefully some people will have been able to meet me at the recent husting I attended at Voluntary Action Sheffield. As someone who has been involved in many third sector groups over the years in many different roles (e.g. I chaired one of Sheffield's largest charities, the City Trust, for 11 years, I have been a trustee of one of our smallest charities, which brings students to Sheffield from Southern Africa, I am a Board member of Sheffield Volunteering) I understand how important these groups are.
