Candidates in Newbury [Region: South East]
Mr Richard Benyon
1. How important is the charity and voluntary sector to your constituency?
I am lucky enough to have represented a constituency with a large and vibrant voluntary sector. I have considered it one of my absolute priorities to support these organisations, work with them and to assist them when they face difficulties. For example, I have assisted the many voluntary transport networks that exist, particularly in rural West Berkshire, who transport patients to hospitals. They were facing a reduction in the number of parking tokens which was going to cost the volunteers, or their organisations a great deal of money. I am glad to say that we managed to get that matter resolved. I have assisted other charities facing expensive planning costs, and also played my part in getting volunteers and their organisations recognised through the awards and honours system. I am strongly of the belief that volunteers do not get the recognition they deserve and often spend a lifetime working for others without getting the thanks they deserve. I have done my best to support voluntary organisations in a great variety of other ways.
2. What efforts will you make - if elected - to work with local charities and voluntary sector organisations in your constituency?
I will continue to do more of the work that I describe in 1) above and, in Parliament, will seek to implement my Party's policies that will make it easier to volunteer, by deregulating the voluntary and incentivising individuals to volunteer.
3. Will you champion the Compact in your constituency, to encourage better partnership working between the local public sector and the voluntary and community sector?
I will certainly champion the Compact in the Newbury Constituency and do my best to encourage a better partnership working between the local public sector and the voluntary and community sector.
