Mr Francis Maude
1. How important is the charity and voluntary sector to your constituency?
Having had the privilege of being Horsham’s Member of Parliament for almost thirteen years, I’ve come to understand how important these organisations are to our area. They're at the heart of the community – whether it’s national charities such as Avert, the Born Free Foundation or the RSPCA, which have chosen to make their home here – or local charitable organisations, such as the Springboard Project, which operate on a shoe-string and which owe a lot of their success to dedicated volunteers. It always amazes me just how much can be done with so few resources.
Horsham and the surrounding villages are always buzzing with charitable events – long may it continue!
2. What efforts will you make - if elected - to work with local charities and voluntary sector organisations in your constituency?
If I am re-elected, I will continue to engage as much as possible with local charities and volunteer groups – whether it’s with highly promoted events such as Mercury FM’s Operation Santa or much quieter events, conducted behind-the-scenes, such as taking part in a Carers Forum, a private visit to a refuge or the Samaritans. As Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office I have responsibility for the Voluntary and Charitable Sectors and much of my understanding has been gained through frequent visits to local charities and groups. Meeting service users and the staff and volunteers who make it all happen is vital for any local representative.
3. Will you champion the Compact in your constituency, to encourage better partnership working between the local public sector and the voluntary and community sector?
I would certainly continue to champion the Compact. Conservatives have pledged to strengthen it. We want to build a Big Society, based on social responsibility and community action. We want to overhaul the bureaucratic and inefficient CRB system; reduce the red tape engulfing Gift Aid; allow voluntary groups to run local services such as Sure Start; give all central government employees annual volunteering leave entitlement; and restore the National Lottery to its original purpose by cutting administrative costs and making sure money goes straight to good causes. There’s a lot to be done - we can make a huge difference locally and nationally.
